Call for papers - Rhetorica Scandinavica

Special issue: Rhetoric in Digital and Technological Transition

Following the NKRF9 conference, we call for papers for a special issue of Rhetorica Scandinavica. We encourage all interested conference participants to submit their conference abstracts in their original or revised form.

Theme

Complex, multimodal forms of communication characterize our time. Digital and technological developments place new demands on rhetoric in all its fields. Privately owned platforms, algorithms, and AI are shaping the communication practices, e.g. in changed conditions for agency, perceptions of authenticity and political debate generally.  At the same time, rhetoric has a strong analog side, where places, bodies, and materials remain central to communicative action.

With the theme “Rhetoric in digital and technological transition” the conference focuses on the opportunities and challenges that rhetorical practice, theory, methodology, pedagogy, and criticism are facing. What multimodal phenomena and conditions should rhetoric as a field of study address, and what new research questions does this raise? What are the theoretical and methodological limitations of classical rhetoric in the encounter with the digital—and what are the untapped potentials? How can the rhetorical tradition and contemporary rhetorical research contribute to understanding how digital and analogue communication appear in ever-changing mixtures and forms? What opportunities does rhetoric have for transdisciplinary collaborations?

Form requirements

Abstracts for the special issue may be up to 500 words, excl. references.

In this special issue, Rhetorica Scandinavica’s language policy is set aside, and authors are therefore welcome to submit their abstract in the language of their choice: Danish, Swedish, Norwegian or English.
