Normalcies of resistance: critical research on social inclusion at inclusive secondary schools in Germany Public

Lecture by David Brehme, MSc. Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

The lecture will fucus on inclusive education and its impact on creating a sense of belonging for students from diverse backgrounds. Through an ethnographic lens, the talk will introduce to the experiences of year 7-10 students in age-mixed class groups in German middle schools that strive to be inclusive. The research shows how the first weeks of students coming together in a class group, everyday student resistance against school norms and expectations can create spaces for negotiation of social hierarchies and personal identity. The talk will also give an overview of the history and current state of inclusive education in Germany.

Originally trained in psychology, David Brehme is interested in how students and teachers experience inclusive education, questions of social inclusion and belonging, the social construction of normalcy and disability and educational ethnography .
