Silence in Political Activism. Feminist and Phenomenological Perspectives

Appeals to “break the silence” are ubiquitous in contemporary activist movements against sexism and racism. Yet, all too simple appeals to speak up and raise voice might overlook the complexity of some modes of silence and their important role for experiences of resistance and empowerment. Therefore, several contributions in feminist theory and social science have suggested to conceive of silence as a practically and theoretically relevant in-between space (Brown 1996, Mahoney 1996, Parpart 2009, Carrillo & Rowe 2013, Aithamon 2022). But what exactly does this mean? I wish to explore how phenomenological approaches to silence can contribute to this question. What would distinguish a critical and phenomenological approach to silence from existing feminist proposals? In particular, I want to highlight an important difference between silence as an epistemic dimension of aesthetics and an explicitly and implicitly intersubjective dimension of silence.
