Ekatherina Zhukova is a postdoctoral researcher in a collaborative project “Images of Conflict, Conflicting Images”, funded by the Velux Fonden (Denmark) and hosted at the Department of Communication, University of Copenhagen (Prof. Mette Mortensen as PI). Ekatherina’s subproject looks at the role of social media in production and consumption of humanitarian photography and images of atrocity, both pre-Internet (black-and-white) and digital (Web 2.0), on a case study of the Ukrainian famine 1932-1933. Ekatherina holds PhD in Political Science (specialization Political Sociology) from Aarhus University (Denmark), where she investigated post-Chernobyl trauma management narratives in Belarus and Ukraine. She was also a postdoctoral researcher in Gender Studies at Lund University (Sweden), when she interviewed survivors of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster about their experiences of living with radiation and participation in humanitarian recuperation programmes in Italy.
