Rasmus Kleis Nielsen appointed to Committee of Experts on Media Regulators in a Platform-Based Environment

Professor Rasmus Kleis Nielsen (KOMM) has been appointed as a member of the Council of Europe's Committee of Experts on Media Regulators in a Platform-Based Environment (MSI eREG). The appointment is a recognition of both his extensive expertise in journalism, digital media and political communication – and of the university's strong research profile in the field.

The media landscape is changing rapidly. Digital platforms play a central role in the distribution of news and in shaping public debate. This raises new challenges for democracy, freedom of expression, pluralism and transparency. Rasmus Kleis Nielsen is therefore delighted with the appointment and looks forward to contributing to research-based policy in this area:

– I hope that our work in the committee can help to ensure that media regulation is based on research and fits today's platform-based environment. Independent regulatory authorities play a crucial democratic role, especially in times of pressure on rights and institutions, he says.

What is MSI eREG?

MSI eREG is a specialised expert committee under the Council of Europe's Steering Committee on Media and Information Society (CDMSI). The committee works to develop analyses, guidelines and recommendations to help member states and media regulators navigate a digital media landscape dominated by global platforms. Among other things, it deals with the independence of regulators, their mandate and opportunities to effectively manage a platform-based public sphere.
