Abstract

Deceptive by design: The moral economy of manipulative practices on digital platforms

Digital platforms not only moderate and curate interactions between users groups but increasingly cultivate desirable relationships that can be commodified through services and marketplaces. Engagement metrics play a central role in evaluating the economic attractiveness of users, creators and brands. These metrics are therefore not surprisingly the subject of manipulation by both the various user groups and platforms. This talk explores critical cases of manipulative practices - such as paying for exposure, baiting for engagement, and inflating metrics – and assess the legitimacy of these acts through a moral economy framework.
