The monetization of children’s culture on Youtube

YouTube has grown into a major medium for children and young people and they are increasingly oriented toward content created by other children and young people occupying this media environment. On one hand this can be seen as a form of empowerment: Children and young people are given a platform and a set of tools for making themselves heard and seen by their peers. On the other hand, this takes place within a highly commercialised context where children’s content and interactions are monetized by a range of actors including Youtube itself.
In this research seminar we will discuss the implications of this intersection on the basis of three presentations: Rasmus Fisker from Mediacom will explain some of the business rationales behind Youtube celebrity culture based on his work in influencer marking. Stine Liv Johansen will discuss the commercial aspects of the young youtuber Naja Münsters presence on Youtube and Anne Mette Thorhauge will discuss the intersections and alliances between online game providers and Youtube celebrities.
The seminar is open and everyone is welcome at this research seminar..
